| Governor's intervention sought to help out Gujjars in Jammu | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Aug 1
The Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation (TRCF) today sought the intervention of Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra to help out nomadic Gujjars and their livestock suffering due to the prolonged agitation in Jammu region over the Amarnath land row. "The Nomadic Gujjars of five districts of Jammu region are facing acute shortage of essentials as the ongoing land row turned into an unending agitation, pushing the community into a tight spot," a spokesman of the TRCF said in a statement here. Many nomadic families in Jammu and adjoining districts are without edibles, he said. The TRCF, which has sent separate letters to Vohra and Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti which is spearheading an agitation over the Amarnath land row in the region, appealed to the majority community of Jammu to allow the supply of edibles, essential commodities and medicines in the nomadic area where Muslim Gujjars reside. Alleging that they are not being allowed to carry out relief work in the areas where the Gujjars are stranded for the past two weeks, the spokesman said TRCF sought the help of the Samiti to help the Gujjars of Jammu, Reasi, Samba, Kathua and Udhampur. "We express apprehension that in case the agitation continues, the livestock of tribal Gujjars residing in Jammu region will be in danger and they may lose thousands of animals which are their only source of income and livelihood," the spokesman said. |
