| PDP condemns targeted attacks, economic blockade | | Bigots striking at J & K's integrity: Mufti | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Aug 1
Expressing serious concern over the prevailing troubled situation in Jammu, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said the rhetoric of hatred has started causing incalculable damage to the State's integrity and amiable ethos. "The prevailing grim situation can't be allowed to dither anymore as it has the potential of not only impairing the gains of the peace process but striking at the roots of the State's integrity and its political composition as well," Sayeed said in a statement here today. "I hope the leaders of the agitation see wisdom, sooner the better, and don't push the situation to a point of no return," he said. Sayeed said, amid a surcharged situation, the parochial threats like economic blockade and quit Jammu could dangerously polarize the State on regional and ethnic lines. "In the contemporary world we know only about the hapless Palestinians facing continuous economic blockade by tyrannical Israelis and replication of such bigoted policies can't be tolerated in our society," he said and added that in today's world even the warring nation-states do not subscribe to the dogmatic concept of economic blockade. Strongly condemning the unwarranted attacks by communal elements on the religious places and people from a particular religion and region in Jammu, Sayeed said by such subversive acts the Sangh Parivar is trying to tear apart the State's social fabric without caring for the consequences. "While the majority of the people in Jammu do not subscribe to such communal ploy, some fascist elements are, for political purposes, holding the whole region to ransom," he said. Sayeed said at a time when the region's leadership is heading towards pulling down the political and geographical barriers between the countries, the economic blockade enforced on Kashmir is an antithesis of the emerging scenario. He said the BJP leaders Atal Behari Vajpayee and L K Advani must step in and help resolve the dangerous crisis being fueled by the Sangh Parivar. "As the process of political reconciliation in the region was in fact pioneered by Vajpayee and then carried forward by Dr Manmohan Singh, it is the responsibility of the BJP leaders to ensure that its gains do not slip away," he said. Reiterating PDP's demand for opening up of all the cross-border traditional routes in Kashmir, Sayeed said in the present scenario Kashmiris can't be left at the mercy of a single land-route connecting them to the rest of the world. "The economic blockade enforced on Kashmir has only reinvented the vulnerability of this road to the political and geographical vagaries," he said and added that the present scenario has strengthened the PDP's view that Kashmiris have been forced into a situation of geographical siege for the past sixty years and they want to now come out of the shell and move around freely in the region. He said substantial problem of Kashmir is because of this mentality of siege that is like a pressure-cooker situation and could explode any moment. |
