9/7/2006 7:39:17 PM

Islamabad, Sep 7 Controversial issues such as Kargil war, the alleged hijacking of plane by the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the 1999 military coup and more figure prominently in the autobiography of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, a media report said today.

General Musharraf's autobiography ''In the Line of Fire - A Memoir,'' that deals with such issues including the assassination attempts on him, in detail, will be launched in New York on September 25 in the presence of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, The Nation newspaper reported.

The book will be available in the country on the same day. The Urdu version of the book will be published by Feroz Sons The hardback copies of the General’s autobiography have been priced at 24 dollars and cost Rs 1200 in the country. The Internet bookseller Amazon has said it will sell copies online at a little over 17 dollars.

The book is spread over 368 pages and is said to contain information about Pakistan’s military ruler, from his family life and his days as a soldier to the overthrow of an elected government in 1999.

There are some chapters based on his account of some of the key decisions he took including the Kargil conflict with India and the joining the US-led global war on terror.

There is also the tale of assassination bids on him in 2003 by extremist organisations.

Several British and American publishers had shown interest in his autobiography. After much negotiations Simon & Schuster managed to convince the President to write his memoirs in early 2005. He reportedly got a hefty sum as advance.

Soon after the President signed the contract, a section of media reported that a senior journalist would help him with the manuscript but this would not amount to co-authorship.
