| Jammuites lock PDP-NC leaders inside airport | | 4 hrs for Farooq, Mehbooba to cover 12 Kms | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 1
As the spirit in Jammu hardens against the Kashmiri leaders, former Chief Minister and National Conference patron Dr Farooq Abdullah and Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti today had to bear the brunt of public ire when they were forced cool heels in the premises of Jammu’s civil airport as thousands of protestors gathered outside to block their exit. The overwhelming demonstration at the airport, also joined by women, children and elders, was one of the severest of the recent agitation where people blocked all roads and stayed outside the airport in scorching heat for more than four hours. However, finally the administration managed to give a slip to the protestors and after four hours of wait, Farooq and Mehbooba were whisked away to the Raj Bhawan under a high security grid. Abdullah and Mufti had flown from Srinagar to Jammu Friday to attend the all party meeting called by Governor N.N. Vohra The word leaked out that Abdullah and Mufti would be attending the all party meeting following which protesters blocked the roads leading to the airport and they pelted stones. The state government offered to airlift them in helicopter to the Raj Bhavan but they declined. After a while, the protestors `learnt' that either the two leaders were going to be taken back to Srinagar or being airlifted to Raj Bhavan. So, they dispersed with some heading for the Raj Bhavan. In the meantime, the route from airport to the Raj Bhavan, a distance of about 12 km, was virtually sealed by three battalions of police and para-military personnel. It was then that the Abdullah and Mufti left the airport for the Raj Bhavan by road. |
