Situation in Jammu region today literally slipped out of the hands of the government and curfew had to be re-imposed for an indefinite period after two protesters lost life in Police firing in Samba district headquarters. Protests and demonstrations continued across Jammu region for tenth consecutive day and the situation took a violent turn at many places. Reports of communal clashes have also poured in from several places of the region. Huge loss to public and private property has been reported as law and order situation worsened and the Police and paramilitary forces found it absolutely difficult to handle the situation. Reports from Samba said that after day long of tense protests and demonstrations Police resorted to rubber-bullet firing to which was aggressively retaliated by the protestors with stone pelting. When situation turned out of control, the Police opened firing in which two protestors sustained critical injuries and were shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital. This incident happened at around 6:30 in the evening. The injured protestors succumbed to their injuries in the Government Medical College here. They have been identified as Sunil Singh and Jugal Kishore. This lead to further escalation of tension in Samba and army had to be called out to control the situation. Entire district headquarter of Samba and its peripheral areas were late this evening handed over to the Army. Earlier in the day also the mob attacked at the official resident of the Deputy Commissioner and situation could be controlled only by the Army intervention. Meanwhile, Police said that it was a case of gang-war. Till late this evening, the Police continued to assert that the two youth killed in Samba were a result of an internal gang-war. However, no further explanation was offered to clarify these assertions. Incident of communal clash were reported from Kanha Chak area on the outskirts of Jammu City where Gujjars came under the receiving end of protestors. However, the Army and Police were quick to intervene and offer secure shelter to the Gujjars. A team of visiting Revenue officials later said that the tension was triggered by an old property dispute. Late night reports said that several protestors marched towards the Ved Mandir enclave situation residence of PDP leader Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and when Police resorted to heavy action on them. The unrelenting protestors continued to march towards the enclave and the Police had to open fire in air. Nine protestors are reported to have injured in the melee. Meanwhile, the Jammu shutdown entered the ninth day Friday. Shops, commercial establishments and educational institutions were closed. Over 80 people, including seven cops, were injured in stepped-up violence on Friday as protestors defied curfew orders in Jammu and Samba districts and burnt a police station and 14 houses. Nearly 3,000 protesters defied curfew orders and assembled before the Raj Bhavan and shouted slogans against Governor N N Vohra and burnt effigies. The mob became violent over the arrival of Abdullah and Mehbooba and resorted to stone-pelting. It them went on the rampage and swooped over the nearby Panjtirthi police station and set it on fire. Police fired teargas shells and resorted to baton charge to quell the mob. They also fired several rounds in the air to disperse the mob. A policeman was injured in accidental fire and was shifted to hospital 19 people, including 4 cops, were injured in the clashes. The protesters also burnt 14 houses in Khour area of the border tehsil of Akhnoor. In resulting clashes with police, four persons were injured. Five persons and two policemen were injured in clashes in Samba town after protesters defied the curfew orders. The Jammu and Kashmir government imposed curfew in Jammu and Samba districts, comprising 37 police station areas, and section 144 in Udhampur and Kathua districts as a precautionary measure. |
