National Conference patron Dr Farooq Abdullah feels hopeful that the Governor's plan of reconstituting the Amarnath Shrine Board will end the current turmoil in Jammu. He today said that when the reconstituted Board, which will have state subjects as its members,is allowed to carry out all the arrangements for the annual Yatra it was suficient to restore peace in Jammu.
Dr Abdullah said since the Governor has suggested to the Sangarsh Samiti leaders to submit of panel of names for appointing them as Board members he hoped that the Samiti would respond favourably to the Governor as restoration of peace was important for not only the Jammu region but for the entire state.
However, the state unit of the BJP has rejected the Governor's plan of reconstituting the Board.Vicepresident BJP,Prof. Hari Om,said "we will not buy Governor's attempt at hoodwinking the people of Jammu." He said the constitution provides for reconstituting of the Shrine Board after every three years and the Governor was not doing any favour to "us."He said that restoration of the land to the Board was the basic issue "we are campaigning for."
Senior Panthers Party leader,Harsh Dev Singh, said "there is no harm in appointing state subjects as Board members. At least local members could take decisions on the spoit without waiting for nostate subject members from Mumbai and Delhi to come to Jammu for attending the Board meeting."
He said if the board was reconstituted and it comprised local members only there should be no objection of land was diverted to the Board.Harsh Dev said that he was surprised by the way the National Conference and the PDP objected to the land diversion. He said he has asked the same question to Faroo Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti during the All Party meeting convened by the Governor in Jammu yesterday and stated that while Farooq Abdullah prfeferred to keep mum Mehbooba said that since the forest land was being diverted to the Board "we had objected.
Harsh Dev said "I reminded Mehbooba that large chunks of land had been transferred to Baba Ghulam Shah university in Rajouri and Islamic University in Kashmir and we had not objected to it." He said he also reminded Mufti that vast chunks of forest land had been grabbed by influential people, including politiciand and bureaucrats in the state and both the PDP and the NC leadership had not raised any hue and cry.
