The highly, extreme repressive step
8/2/2008 11:06:28 PM
After failing to quell the unrest prevailing in Jammu with a strong agitation going on allover the region against injustices hurled on them and to protest against their feeling of hurt of their religious sentiments, the Governor N N Vohra has, in desperation taken the extreme step and a highly repressive measure to handover law and order in Jammu city and many other towns to the army, with police repeatedly announcing that any body coming out of his house will be shot at sight. This extreme repressive measure adopted by the Governor to suppress the ongoing agitation in the length and breadth of Jammu, is reminiscent of such repressive steps adopted by the British rule in India to suppress the quit India movement and other agitational programs launched by the freedom fighters against the British occupation of the country. Although even this desperate step taken by the Governor has not served the desirous purpose of breaking the will of the people and their determination to have a do or die battle to protect their rights, regional identity and assert for their existence and right to peacefully protest against their hurt religious sentiments, this extreme oppressive measure has earned Governor Vohra the extreme displeasure of the people of Jammu, who are comparing him with Gen Dyre, who had ordered firing at the peaceful protestors gathered in large number at Jalain Wala Bagh in Amritsar. The Governor who had only a day before exercise the option to have negotiated settlement of the issue in dispute with Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti and had also called a meting of representatives of all the political parties in the state to find a way out of the impasse, has himself closed this option by taking the extreme step. Obviously, he has accepted his defeat in convincing the people of Jammu of his bonafides and good intentions in assuaging their hurt sentiments and feeling of being meted out raw deal, through the path of parleys and negotiations and instead has chosen the path of confrontation, using force to suppress the agitation. The highly experienced administrators as Mr. Vohra has been, who has served at important assignments with the union government for a quite long time, was expected to display his large nerves to handle the situation tactfully and imaginatively, adopting the path of persuasion and exercising many alternative options, offering the agitating people of Jammu some viable solution acceptable to them, to end the deadlock and impasse. But he has projected himself in a very poor shape by his mishandling of the entire situation from the very beginning. He is believed to be working under extreme sense of bureaucratic ego by acting in panic and desperation in adopting extreme repressive measures. Now when he has failed to break the will of the demonstrators, with protestors continuously violating curfew restrictions, coming out openly in the streets, holding demonstrations even in the face of heavy deployment of armed forces, what next option Vohra has to deal with the situation? Deploying of army to deal with the agitators, who are only fighting for their genuine cause and who stand for upholding the Indian national flag in the state, is a highly retrogressive and dangerous step. The army is meant to fight against the enemies of the country and not against the patriotic and nationalist people, who only differ in their approach and perception by adopting the path of agitation to fight against the anti national elements.
