| wrong signals from Kashmir provoke Jammuites | | | Gareeb Dass
Jammu,August 3:-Anybody in Kashmir,whether politicians or separatists,seem to be engaged in trying to provoke the Jammuites instead of making an attempt at defusing the volatile situation that has emerged after the region was rocked by violence and public demonstration over the revocation of the land order.A senior and a shrewd politician of the stature of Mufti Mohd.Sayeed has,in his appeal to Atal Behari Vajpayee and L.K.Advani for defusing the crisis in Jammu,has not desisted in giving a sting at the tail of his statement. when he said,while referring to the threat of economic blockade issued by the agitators in Jammu, that "in the contemporary world we know only about the hapless Palestinians facing continuous economic blockade by tyrannical Isrealis."If this statement is read between the lines one could say that the Mufti has treated Kashmiris as hapless Palestinians and those in Jammu like Israelis.Has he ever pondered over what happened why it happened and who ignited the flame?Possibly he has not carried out any such exercise.
If at all another provocation was required it was given by his daughter who said in Jammu "Jammu key logoon ko apnee galti ka Khamiyazaa uthhana padey gaa"(let the people of Jammu face the consequences of their blunder).Had the farther and the daughter thought over the entire course of events that took place in Kashmir first and now in Jammu they would realise that the PDP leadership,with eyes on the electoral gains,fired the first salvo to hurt the religious sentiments of the people in Jammu when it played a vital role in forcing the Azad led Government to cancel the land diversions order.Possibly the Mufti and his daughter need not carry out ant introspection because they have received reports from the field in the valley that whatever stand they took on the land diversion issue could be vindicated by peoples support to the party in the ensuing election.
When senior Panther Party leader Harsh Dev Singh asked Mehbooba as to why she and her party had objected to the land diversion she had told him that she opposed it because forest land had been diverted to the Shrine Board.Harsh Dev had the wit and wisdom to silence her when he reminded her that vast chunks of forest land had been grabbed by influential people,including politicians and bureaucrats,in the entire state.Yet another provocation to Jammuites.Separatists and Kashmir centric political party leaders have started blaming the Jammuites for trying to divide the state on communal and parochial lines.Again those who raise such voices do forget that the first outburst against the land diversion was heard in Kashmir.But the valley centric politicians do not wish to treat the initial cry against land diversion in kashmir as a parochial roar.Against this if the Jammuites have staged massive protest demonstrations,defying curfew restrictions and faced police lathis,tear smoke and bullets,it is being treated as communal and parochial.
When we find such an outlook of the mainstream political leaders,who day in and day out swear in the name of nationalism,one should not blame the separatists who wish to see a situation in which they could use Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road for trade and travel.A senior Sangarsh Samiti leader has said "whatever Kashmiris do and,whatever act they perform, are as good as sermons and whenever the Jammuites give vent to their genuine feelings that is all trash and parochial." He says "it is irony of fate." |
