| Our patience had exhausted: CS | | |
Jammu, Aug 3: Found on the sorry side of fence, the government today sought to clarify that no ban of any sort has been imposed on the media in Jammu except prohibition of telecast of provocative material by two cable television networks. The order of prohibition on transmission by two local cable network channels in Jammu issued by the District Magistrate was warranted by provocative and inflammatory content telecast by these during the past several days despite being advised by the administration not to do so, said the government. The Chief Secretary, Mr. S. S. Kapur said at a press conference here today that the two channel operators were twice called by the administration and asked not to transmit the content that flared up passions and violence. He said they were advised to stick to the programme code as given in the Cable Network (Regulation) Act, 1995. He said they were also issued notices under the law. However, he said the two channels continued to transmit highly objectionable and provocative material upon which the District Magistrate has ordered prohibition on transmission of these channels. The Chief Secretary made it clear that there was no restriction, much less the ban, on media including newspapers, national news channels or entertainment channels, in the State. He said since the two cable operators did not have signal separators, the transmission of entertainment channels or national news channels provided by the two cable services in the city had also got disrupted. There is no ban on their transmission, he added. The disruption in the signal of national news and entertainment channels in Jammu city is only due to the failure of the two cable operators in installing signal separators. The CS said that the government was to safeguard public interest and was not against journalists. He said all patience had been exhausted in this case and the time had come to take action.
