Jammu, Aug 3: Operation of the key 300-km long Jammu-Srinagar national highway, which has been hit by the Amarnath land row, was today handed over to the Army for smooth movement of vehicles to and from the Kashmir valley. The traffic on the highway resumed after 12 days as 38 fruit trucks crossed Lakhanpur and 185 trucks and oil tankers proceeded towards Kashmir. Supply of essential items to the valley had also been affected during the stir. "We have handed over the highway to the army and traffic has been restored from Lakhanpur in Kathua district to Banihal in Ramban district via Udhampur, Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts in Jammu region," top police officials told reporters.
The Pathankote-Jammu-Banihal section of the highway was choked by the protestors for the past 12 days and over 200 trucks and other vehicles were damaged and 17 vehicles burnt by the demonstrators protesting over the Amarnath issue.
38 trucks carrying fruits from Kashmir to New Delhi crossed the trouble-torn section of the highway and entered Punjab area via Lakhanpur toll post in Kathua district safely under the supervision of the army, they said.
Authorities today rushed 114 oil tankers and 70 trucks carrying essential supplies to Kashmir valley from Jammu, they said.
The tankers and trucks have reached Kashmir this afternoon, they said, adding that the Army has setup check posts on the Highway from Lakhanpur to Banihal and intensified patrolling.
