Cong chief unhappy over political drama; Sonia denies appointment to Azad
`PDP likely to give up claim for post of DyCM
9/7/2006 8:21:07 PM

Jammu, Sep 07 Congress High Command seems to have sent a clear signal of its displeasure to chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad over the recent high voltage political drama within the coalition government. This was evident from the fact that Azad was denied appointment by the All India Congress Committee Chief Sonia Gandhi during his recent visit to the union capital.
Highly placed sources in the Congress have disclosed that Azad returned to the state without meeting Congress chief, with whom the former had sought an appointment to discuss the political situation.
If the sources are to be believed Sonia preferred to meet Mangat Ram Sharma former deputy chief minister, who is now a minister in Azad’s cabinet while denying appointment to the chief minister. While an aide of the chief minister said that the appointment was not denied but the Congress chief was not available due to her busy schedule, sources said, “The appointment was denied because the Congress high command was not happy over the recent political drama between the two major coalition alliances”.
It was reliably learnt that Azad was asked by the party high command to distant himself from the tussle between the Peoples Democratic Party leadership and former deputy chief minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig so that the relations between the coalition partners remain stable.
“However, what seems to have worked against Azad is that he did not change the portfolio of Baig despite the fact that the PDP leadership had clearly requested for the same”, sources told News Agency of Kashmir. This, they added, was not welcomed by the PDP which finally built pressure on Baig to quit from the post.
“The PDP high command is understood to have discussed the matter with Sonia Gandhi”, sources said adding, “Azad would now have to use his friends in New Delhi to make the things clear before the Congress chief.
Meanwhile, while the deadlock over the appointment of new deputy chief minister of the state continue the Peoples Democratic Party was reportedly making up its mind to abolish the post for the remaining term.
Sources said that keeping in view the fact that import portfolios in the state cabinet went into PDP’s basket and rate race among the party leadership for the post Mufti Muhammad Sayeed has indicated that the party would not appoint any candidate for the coveted post.
Though the proposal has not be finalized yet, there is every possibility that the state government would continue without the Deputy Chief Minister for the rest of the term.
