Abdullah family females go vocal
6/19/2020 12:06:57 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, June 18: Even as former Chief Ministers and senior National Conference leaders –Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah generally prefer silence since the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019, it is the female members of their family who are taking a lead to be vocal.
In the latest, Dr Abdullah’s daughter purportedly ridiculed India over standoff with China in Ladakh. In a tweet attributed to her, she said “Let’s wait for the China perhaps they will restore 4G.”
The post took the nation by storm with many asking that how come could the member of a mainstream political party make such irresponsible statement.
Ironically her brother and National Conference President Omar Abdullah who has been largely silent on the Ladakh standoff took to twitter in a veiled support for the tweet attributed to his sister.
Omar said “SlimesNow dare not question the government about what’s happening in Ladakh and they can’t attack Trump for offering to mediate so they go after a private individual for a tweet. You have the pity the cowardice on display here.”
The females from the Abdullah family became vocal in the month of October 2019, after the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
On October 15, sister and aunt of Omar Abdullah, Safia Abdullah and Suriaya Abdullah, took part in the civil society protest in Srinagar, the first of its kind in the 73 days after Article 370 was made inoperable in Jammu and Kashmir. The police, however, had foiled the protest and detained them. In February, Omar Abdullah's other sister Sara Abdullah Pilot challenged his detention and charges under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) before the Supreme Court, asking for the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister to be produced in court and freed immediately. Sara Abdullah Pilot had said her brother's detention was a grave violation of his constitutional rights including that of freedom of speech, and is part of a "consistent and concerted effort to muzzle all political rivals".
"The order conflates 'Governmental policy' with the 'Indian State', suggesting that any opposition to the former constitutes a threat to the latter. This is wholly antithetical to a democratic polity and undermines the Indian Constitution," Sara’s petition had said till Omar was finally released.
Last month, Safia Abdullah had mistaken the Jammu Municipal Corporation as Srinagar Municipal Corporation and hailed the work of SMC Mayor Junaid Mattoo.
Despite repeated attempts the Abdullah family couldn’t be contacted for comments.
