| Valley shuts: 1 killed, 14 injured | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 4
A general strike called by Geelani faction of Hurriyat Conference in purported “support of Muslims” crippled normal life across Kashmir Valley as violent protests and demonstrations erupted at several places in which one agitator was killed while 14 security forces personnel were injured with one of them critical. With no such appeal or request for support made by any section in Jammu, the Hurriyat Conference faction led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani had called a Valley-wide shut down in solidarity with Muslims of Jammu and the traders and transporters of Kashmir Valley. However, Geelani was not allowed by the authorities to come out as he was out under house arrest since last evening. Violent protests and demonstrations erupted across Kashmir Valley since early this morning which made it tough for the Police and Paramilitary forces to handle situation. A Police spokesman said that there were few incidents of stone pelting in Bijbehara, Kakpora and various places in Srinagar. In these incidents one person died, eleven policemen and three CRPF personnel were injured. Due to stone pelting by a mob at Maisuma, Police resorted to tear smoke shelling to disperse the mob in which one boy namely Asif Mehraj, son of Mehraj-ud-Din, resident of Maisuma Srinagar got injured. The injured boy was rushed to SMHS hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Also eleven policemen and three CRPF personnel were injured, one CRPF personnel is serious. Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the roads in response to the strike call. Work in government offices, banks and other public undertakings was also affected. The educational institutions wore a deserted look as students and teachers stayed away. The board examinations scheduled for today were also cancelled. Reports of complete shut down were received from Baramulla, Sopore and other major towns of the north Kashmir where shops and other business establishments remained closed and traffic off the roads. Similar reports were received from other district headquarters and other major towns, including south Kashmir district of Anantnag where three incidents of stone pelting were reported in the morning. |
