| Govt may restructure Amarnath Shrine Board | | | New Delhi | Aug 5
The display of violence and the mounting tension in Jammu and Kashmir have increased worries for the Central Government. As the protests in Jammu and adjoining areas enter the twelfth day, the UPA is trying for a political consensus to resolve the conflict. As a first step, an all-party meeting has been called for on August 6. Meanwhile, Congress Spokesperson, Jayanthi Natarajan has confirmed that the party is in talks with the BJP for cooperation on the issue. "Sonia Gandhi is talking to the Opposition. She spoke to BJP President Rajnath Singh on Monday," Jayanthi Natarajan said. The Congress President approaching the Opposition is an indication of how seriously the Centre is viewing the ground situation in Jammu. Perhaps for the first time in the recent times, the Prime Minister has reached out to the Opposition. It has also learnt that a proposal of reconstituting the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board is presently being considered at the very top, with better representation for both Jammu & Kashmir. If this also fails, then calling for elections might just be the only way out. BJP Spokesperson, Arun Jaitly says, "We just want the land to be returned to the Amarnath Shrine Board." On the ground, the VHP is threatening a nationwide agitation and fruit growers are threatening to sell their produce in Pakistan occupied Kashmir if the Jammu-Srinagar Highway remains blocked. A high-level team from the Home and Defence Ministries have left for Srinagar to find a way out.The situation in J&K has gone beyond the Amarnath Shrine Board issue and the Centre is now grappling with how to defuse the crisis before a local issue becomes a major international embarrassment. |
