MDF demands early restoration of Khelani-Goha road
9/7/2006 8:23:23 PM
Jammu, Sep 07 : Marmat Development Forum has demanded immediate restoration of Khelani-Goha road link which was blocked due to the continuous rains in the area, last week.
Marmat Development Forum held a meeting at Doda under the chairmanship of its president Anayatulla Lone to discuss the situation arising out of the recent rains and flash floods in the district which has cut Marmat area from the rest of the state.
As per a press release, issued here, the members of the Forum took strong notice of the government’s failure to restore Khelani-Goha, the only road link from Doda to Marmat, which suffered extensive damage due to the continuous rains, last week.
Speaking on the occasion, president of the Forum Anayatulla Lone said that the due to the rains the road to Marmat was blocked leaving the population of more than 50,000 people on the mercy of God. Despite of the fact that the matter was well within the knowledge of the district administration nothing has been done to restore the road link, even after more than a week.
Claiming that shortage of food grains and Medicare facilities have threatened the lives of the people in the area, the president of the Forum said that if immediate steps were not taken many innocent lives would be lost.
The road link connects Marmat with rest of the state and in its absence the people might face starvation, he added. Moreover, the residents of the area are also dependent on District Hospital Doda for medicare facilities as such the fate of the ill people of the area can be well gauged.
The president alleged that it is very shocking that the revenue officials who were supposed to be in Marmat at this crucial juncture were also transferred at the same time thus crippling entire government machinery in the area.
The Forum urged the chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to take immediate steps and pass necessary directions to the concerned agencies so that the road links can be restored. It was further urged that loss suffered by the people in the area shall also be assessed and compensation be paid to the people.
