Mr Vohra expressed his deep concern over the damages caused to the railway-track at Hiranagar and said that such acts were reprehnsible and caused untold inconvenience to the travelling public besides enormous economic losses. He observed with anguish the continuing acts of violence, assault of public servants and targetting of governmental property. He expressed grave concern over the incidents during the day and stressed that wanton violence and assault on public property would not yield any outcome for the agitating elements, as the losses were against public interest. He expressed the hope that in this hour of crisis, diverse sections of the society would contribute their best in bringing about harmony among the people of various faiths and communities and between people of the Jammu and Kashmir regions. While the Administration is resolutely coping up with the law and order situation, the Governor strongly urged the people to show restraint and collectively strive for heralding peace and normalcy. Earlier while talking to the media persons in Srinagar Vohra expressed the hope that the leaders of various political groups and socio-cultural organisations would play a more active role in defusing the current situation. On being asked about the status of the dialogue with Shri Amarnathji Yatra Sangarash Samiti, Mr Vohra said that for reaching an amicable solution, continuation of a meaningful dialogue is crucial. He reiterated that there is no issue which could not be resolved through discussion and dialogue. When his attention was drawn to the reported hunger-strike by J&K National Panthers Party President, Professor Bhim Singh, the Governor said that Prof Singh is a senior and respectable leader of the State and appealed to him to utilize other means for defusing the situation. Recalling his recent meetings with Prof Singh, he mentioned that his discussions with him had been very educative. In reply to a question on the proposed hunger strike of Mr Mohammed Yasin Malik, the Governor observed that traffic on the Srinagar-Lakhanpur National Highway had been restored and the movement of fruit and essential commodities was being monitored on a continuous basis so as to ensure that there was no disruption. He appreciated the concern for hassle-free movement of fruit and essential commodities on the National Highway and assured that all efforts were apace to ensure complete restoration of traffic and movement of goods on the Highway. As such, he hoped that Mr Malik would reconsider his decision. The Governor called upon the leaders of all political and social organisations and the people of the State to take all possible initiatives to promote understanding and deeper linkage between various groups and peoples in Jammu and Kashmir regions in true spirit of its composite culture and exceptional identity. Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed called on the Governor N N Vohra here today to discuss the prevailing situation in the State. In his hour-long meeting with the Governor, Sayeed deliberated in detail on the political and security aspects of the prevailing situation and offered his party's full support and cooperation in bringing the situation back to normal. He expressed grave concern over the slide in the normalization process that was initiated in 2002 and called for immediate confidence building measures to prevent further deterioration of the situation. Sayeed said the regional and communal polarization has started assuming dangerous dimensions and all the political parties and groups must come forward and help in defusing the situation that has now started threatening the State's integrity. He said the tremendous gains on the political and developmental fronts, made between 2002 and 2005, have started evaporating and regional and religious gulf is widening fast to the detriment of the State's interests. Urging the people, both in Jammu region and Kashmir valley to exercise restraint and do not push the situation beyond a point of no return, Sayeed made a passionate plea to the people in both the regions to not allow the vested interests to exploit the situation. He said the political parties and the civil society in both the regions must come forward and help the Government in defusing the situation and restore the environment of amity and harmony between the people in different regions of the State. Sayeed assured the Governor that his party would support any such endeavor that would help resolve the crisis amicably with the interests of all the regions in tact. |
