Jammu | Aug 5

Literally pushed to the wall by strong contingents of agitators in different parts of region, the Police today said it 102 of its cops have been injured in 52 major incidents of past 36 days while it opened fire only in three cases.
Defending the Police, a spokesman of the administration today fervently appealed to the people of Jammu region to cooperate with the administration to maintain law and order in the region and help in minimizing inconvenience to the general masses .
Advising people to restrain from violating curfew, the spokesman said that this measure is being taken to prevent unleashing of violence and loss of life and property . He said that all right thinking people need to appreciate that maintenance of peace, law and order as well as communal harmony are imperative at this difficult juncture. He said that law and order authorities have exercised utmost restraint in responding to the present unfortunate situation and only in those circumstances the police had to act where unruly mobs went berserk setting on fire the public property or endanger life of the law enforcing authorities. The administration feels concerned over such unfortunate incidents but there was no other option, he added.
Substantiating it, the Spokesman said that in 36 days agitation, 52 major incidents have taken place in the Jammu division which left 102 policemen injured .It is only in three cases i.e at Muthi, Samba and Jourian ,the Police had to open fire in self defence leaving two civilians dead while 45 policemen were injured including one District SSP. He said at Jourian, the violent mob has set on fire Niab Tehsil offic, Police Post and some government vehicles. At Samba yesterday, the police had to fire in self-defence when they were caught among the unruly mob from all sides. At Muthi, the Police had to act to rescue the police personnel who were severely beaten after being captured by the mob. In remaining 49 cases, other mob control measures were taken.
The spokesman said that there is no effort on the part of the administration to appease any particular section of the society or impose any undue restrictions on the peaceful protests to air any point of view in a democratic and peaceful manner. Imposition of curfew, he said, is an extraordinary measure to restore order. He made it clear that it is duty of the Government to ensure un-interrupted movement of supplies to all areas of the state to meet immediate requirements of the people.
The spokesman said that the Governor is keen to continue a meaningful dialogue with the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti and is awaiting its early response so that the issue is amicably resolved and peace restored .He hoped that the Samiti will realise serious dimensions of the situation and would use its influence also to help in checking communal over-tones that the present situation has potential to unfold , which would be in no body's interest.
