Bar regrets union Finance Ministery silence on date extension
8/6/2008 11:15:09 PM

Jammu | Aug 6

A meeting the Income-tax Bar Association Jammu chaired by its President senior Advocate Sat Mehta was held which noted with concern serious lapse on the part of Union Finance Ministry to respond favorably to the representation made by the Bar Association to extend date of filing of Income-tax Returns from 31st July to 31st December in view of disturbed conditions prevailing in Jammu since last week of June 2008 due to which all commercial activities have come to standstill.
It was also prevailed upon the Finance Minister of India Mr. P. Chidamram directly as well as through Commissioner Income-tax, Jammu Mr. Virender Singh, Chief Commissioner Income Tax North West Range and the top direct taxes executive body Central Board of Direct Taxes New Delhi to send their recommendations for extension of dates. It was emphatically reiterated in the representation that factors like continued Bandh & Curfew in the entire state; Burning down of Gladini Transformer subjecting the people of three districts of Jammu, Rajouri & Poonch to more than 17 hours power curtailment due to which the computers of the professional including Advocates and Chartered Accountants have became non-functional making even e-filing of returns not feasible; Non-operation of all banks rendering payment of taxes not possible and above all non-availability of prescribed Return Forms with the department till last week of July contributed to non-compliance by most of the tax payers to file their returns.
Even the returns which have been transmitted and up-loaded electronically are likely to become redundant due to inability of the assesses to submit mandatory Forms ITR-V at the department’s receipt counter within a stipulated period of 15 days from e-filing which has in most of the cases already expired.
Fresh appeal has been made to the Union Home Ministry and the Income-tax authorities by the Income-tax Bar Association Jammu to expeditiously act and extend the date so that an impression of insensitivity of even Central Government towards Jammu is not carried by the people.
The members of the Executive Committee who attended the meeting included Vice-President Advocate Vinod Suri; General Secretary Advocate V.K.Grover; Senior Advocates S/Sh. S.L.Mahajan; R.K.Dogra; Inderjit Singh; Vijay Dhawan; Raj Kamal Arora; S.Mohinder Singh; R.K.Mahajan.
