Srinagar | Aug 6

Notwithstanding the law and order problem in Jammu leading to some disruption in the movement of vehicular traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the Amarnath Yatra is going on smoothly and yatris are arriving here daily to have darshan of the cave shrine up in the South Kashmir mountains. This year, a record number of over five lakh pilgrims have already visited the shrine, surpassing the earlier all time high of four lakh pilgrim in 2004.
Meanwhile, the traditional Chhari Pujan in connection with the annual Amarnath Ji pilgrimage was performed at the Shri Amreshwar Temple, Akhara Building in Srinagar today. The Pujan was led by Mahant Deependra Giri, Mahant Chhari Mubarak, Swami Amarnath Ji. A large number of devotees were present. The Pujan was held amid chanting of religious hymns.
"The Amarnath yatra is being conducted smoothly as has been over the years", said a spokesman of Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) today. "There is no change in the conduct of the pilgrimage", he added.
The SASB official said that there has been no disruption in the yatra and local people are actively cooperating with the yatra. He said government departments, langar wallas, local labourers, ponnywallas and dhandiwallas are all contributing towards the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage. He said the pilgrimage is going on in a pleasant atmosphere and better stay and food facilities are being provided to the yatris.
Meanwhile, the pilgrims are arriving daily from different parts of the country and proceeding to the cave shrine through the twin routes of Pahalgam and Baltal to perform their religious duty. According to SASB spokesman, on Tuesday, 1174 yatris proceeded to the Amarnath cave including 632 from Pahalgam and 542 from Baltal. These include 277 pilgrims going to the cave shrine by air. The spokesman said that today 613 yatris including 401 from Pahalgam route visited the shrine for darshan.
The pilgrims are all praise for the arrangements and the hospitality extended by the local people. Hariram Harinathika of Tata Nagar, Jamshedpur (Jharkhand) said that some elements are creating misconceptions but he has found local people very nice and cooperative. Ganpath Amrita Jawahari, hailing from Ahmad Nagar, Maharashtra, said that besides local people, the army also helps the pilgrims. He said that he encountered no problem during the yatra. Jawahari had taken the Pahalgam route to the cave shrine and returned via Baltal. H. C. Gupta of Gurgaon, Haryana and Mahendra Gupta of Kolkatta, who had just returned from the holy cave, also shared similar views and said that secular traditions have to be kept alive to foster amity among different communities.
