| Eighth life goes for land | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 6 ] • Youth killed in army firing in Kathua • Tension in Nagorta, Army called out • Open breach of curfew across Jammu • Rail service restored, strand cleared
Even as one person was killed in Army retaliatory firing, there was hardly any place across the region where curfew was not violated as the second round of agitation on the Shri Amarnath Shrine land completed 15 days with still no signs of early resolutions in sight. Large-scale violence also broke out in Nagrota area on the outskirts of Jammu City where Army had to intervene to restore some order. Tension and clashes have also been reported from Nowshera in Rajouri district where Army was called in. The four hour relaxation, however, passes off peacefully in Jammu where people made quick shopping early this morning. Reports said that one person was killed and another injured in a firing by the Army to quell stone-pelting mob on Jammu-Pathankot National Highway. The incident took place in the curfew-bound Kathua district. Elsewhere, twelve people were injured in pitched battles between police and protesters in Kathua town overnight as Jammu region remained on the edge with agitation over the Amarnath land revocation row showing no signs of abating. Defying curfew, protesters hit the streets in Udhampur town this morning, demanding immediate restoration of land to the Amarnath Shrine Board, official sources said. Soon after the curfew was re-imposed at 1000 hrs after a three-hour relaxation in Udhampur, over 400 agitators staged a rally chanting slogans against the state administration. The protesters staged torchlight processions in the town last night. Curfew was also relaxed for varying periods in Jammu and Baderwah districts while it remained strictly in force in rest of the Jammu region which is burning since June-end over the land controversy. Clashes broke out between police and protesters in Kathua overnight leaving 12 injured, the sources said adding heavy stone-pelting was also reported from the town. Meanwhile, rail traffic on the Jammu-Pathankot section, thrown haywire yesterday after agitators uprooted a portion of the track, was restored this morning. Most trains left for their destinations after several hours of delay as para-military forces kept a strict vigil along the track. "The rail traffic has been restored on Jammu-Pathankot section. Most stranded trains have left Jammu," SP (Railways) Anil Magotra said. Curfew was relaxed in Jammu city from 0500 hrs to 0900 hrs and later extended till 1100 hrs except in some areas, the sources said. The relaxation period remained incident-free as residents thronged marketplaces to buy essential and other commodities, they said. In Doda district's Baderwah town, no untoward incident was reported during relaxation of the curfew for four hours this morning. Curfew was clamped on Kathua district last evening after protesters blocked movement of trucks, carrying essentials for Kashmir valley, on the Jammu-Pathankot highway. |
