No shortage of food grains in Kashmir: FCI
8/7/2008 10:06:09 PM
New Delhi | Aug 7

Food Corporation of India on Thursday allayed fears of a food grain shortage in Kashmir valley, saying such a situation would not arise even if the economic blockade due to the ongoing Amarnath land transfer row continued for two more months.
"We have 47,000 tons of rice and 35,000 tons of wheat in our godowns in Kashmir, which are enough to feed the entire population of the valley and Ladakh for two months," FCI Chairman and Managing Director Alok Sinha said.
The ongoing Amarnath row has resulted in disruption of vehicular movement on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway - the vital link with the Kashmir valley.
The Army is patrolling the highway to ensure smooth movement of traffic in the wake of the blockade call given by the Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti demanding transfer of the forest land to the Amarnath Shrine Board.
"Every day, 30 trucks, each with nine tons of food grains, leave for Kashmir valley. They are stranded in different places. The moment the road is opened, they will enter Kashmir," Sinha said.
He said there was enough food grains stock in Kashmir for the security personnel, including Army, Air Force, CRPF and others deployed there.
"I don't think there will be any food crisis in Kashmir in the immediate future despite the road blockade," he said.
Sinha said FCI has seven godowns in Kashmir, including two in Ladakh, where a total of 1,03,000 tons of food grains could be stored. "Besides, we have a very efficient network of Public Distribution System in Kashmir," he said.
