| Field agencies seek troops back-up in sensitive areas | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 7
Field agencies have, in their reports, suggested that additional companies of the Army be deployed in the highly sensitive areas of the Jammu region in order to prevent antisocial and antinational elements from committing any mischief during the ongoing agitation over the revocation of the land order. According to official sources, the field agencies have found that the majority of policemen were ill equipped and not fully trained in handling with massive protest demonstrations. In order to make up for this deficiency additional companies of troops be deployed in the disturbed areas for ensuring that the situation remained under control. These field agencies have also suggested to the senior functionaries of the police to issue instructions to the constables deployed on duty to bank more on tear smoke and lathicharge than on direct firing. They have suggested to the officers that in case firing was called for survival of people be given weight-age which was possible if the heads and chests of demonstrators were not targeted. Another suggestion offered by the field agencies was that area inhabited by minority communities be provided with additional security cover. These agencies, during their snap survey, have found tht areas where minorities lived had a thin security cover and mischief mongers could exploit it for their ulterior reasons. On the part of the Government suggestions have been given to state intelligence agency to work in coordination with central intelligence agencies so that the top brass of the state administration received exact and detailed reports on the programmes and plans of the protesters in Jammu and Kashmir.(KIP) |
