| Army chief trips on Pak envoy's comments | | | New Delhi | Aug 7
When Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor launched the usual offensive against the Pakistani ISI at a lecture in New Delhi, he did not imagine that he would be taken on.
“The recent blasts in Kabul have clearly indicated the hand of the ISI,” he said.
An unexpected challenger rose up in the audience to contest the General's accusation. It was Pakistan's Defence Attache in New Delhi, Brigadier Mohammad Iqbal who openly dared Kapoor to substantiate his allegation against the ISI.
“It has been highlighted time and again that there are proofs of ISI involvement. Over a month has passed and those proofs have not been provided on demand by Pakistan. It's better to provide the proof,” he said.
India's Army Chief ducked the challenge, offering no contest
Not only was India's Army Chief left tongue-tied by the Pakistani Defence Attache, he even bailed out the Pakistani Army on repeated ceasefire violations, saying this could be the result of a misunderstanding because of Indian firing on infiltrators.
“We tried action against the infiltrators and fired at them. That was misconstrued as fire by opposite side on to them,” Kapoor said.
The Pakistani was quick to capitalise on General Kapoor's clean chit. “It is not violation from Pak side, perhaps misperceptions on either side,” Iqbal said.
He even used General Kapoor's forum to make a sales pitch for the ISI. “It is one of the most professional and disciplined intelligence agencies,” he said.
Barely a week ago, India's Defence Minister charged Pakistan with violating the ceasefire 19 times this year. Now, Pakistan can only thank the obliging Indian Army Chief. |
