| Top Hizbul militant escapes from custody | | | Srinagar, Sep 7: A top guerrilla of the Hizbul Mujaheedin Thursday escaped from police custody while he was being taken to a court.
Altaf Ahmed Malik alias Pinto, arrested in connection with the killing of a railway engineer in 2004 was to be produced before the magistrate in south Kashmir's Pulwama district, 40 km from here.
"As Malik was being taken inside the court, some of his militant associates who were waiting outside opened fire at the policeman and also exploded a powerful hand grenade which led to panic," said a senior police officer here.
"In the melee, Malik snatched the chain tied to his handcuff and escaped along with his associates."
The injured policeman, identified as Ghulam Qadir, was taken to a local hospital where attending doctors referred him to Soura Medical Institute for specialised treatment. His condition is stated to be serious.
