| Aam aadmi' not impressed by magic of 08.08.08 | | | New Delhi | Aug 8
08.08.08 -- the peculiar alignment of the numbers on the calender today might have given the astrologers a lot of media space, but for 'aam aadmi' it seems to be just another day of toil and hard work. While astrologers, numerologists and feng shui experts fight it out whether the day is auspicious or not, but for a section of ordinary citizens it was just another day. "What is the big buzz about it? Today was nothing special except for that I reached office very late due to rains and got a bad scolding from the boss. But I don't hold the date as the culprit for this," Sunita Sharma, a marketing executive, said. For Rahul Mathur, a Delhi University student, the day was "fun" as any other day with lots of coffee with friends at the college canteen. "This is just another day. If you want to go by the number and all, I am least bothered. But I will miss the Olympics live telecast because of my tuitions. So it is a bad day for me," Mathur remarks. A businessman Surender Kumar, however, begs to differ with others and avers that the numbers have a role to play in life. "I did a good business today compared to other days in the past two-three months," he said. Noted astrologer Bejan Daruwalla said that in India, people believe that the number eight is an unlucky number but neighbouring Chinese believe it to be a very lucky number. Numerologist Swetta Jhumani said the date is special. Although the number 8 is not a very auspicious number in numerology, yet "the presence of three 8 takes the total to 24 (888=24), which is considered a good number in numerology." Another numerologist Niraj Mancchanda argues that the three 8's together offset the negative vibes of the number 8 as the total is 24. "Otherwise, disasters could have happened. Many disasters have occurred on the 8th or on a date, the total of which comes to 8," Mancchanda said. However, a well-known Feng Shui expert Charuhas Naik said: "It is a very auspicious number. The number 8 brings us fortune and wealth. This is the reason why the Chinese are kicking off the Olympics on 08.08.2008." Rumour mills were abuzz Telugu matinee idol Chiranjeevi, who is nursing high political ambitions, would announce the launch of his party today, keeping date with the auspicious day. But nothing of that sort happened and it is heard that the actor is now planning the launch on his birthday falling on August 22. The peculiar alignment of the numbers on the calender will end after 12-12-12 and one have to wait for another ten years for a similar numerical experience 22-2-22. From then on it will take 11 years such numerical alignment like 3/3/33 and 4/4/44 and so on. A Google search for '08.08.08, India' yielded 2.78 lakh web pages while 1.7 crore webpages cropped up when searched for just '08.08.08'. Historically, August eight had many events to its credit. It was on this day in 1942 that the country's freedom fighters thundered 'Quit India' to the British empire while seven years later, its neighbour Bhutan became independent. Pakistan's national flag was adopted on August eight in 1947 while the same day in 1990 saw Iraq's former dictator Saddam Hussein invading Kuwait which led to the Gulf War. For the United States, the day gave a unique place in history when US President Richard Nixon announced his resignation in 1974 after the 'Watergate Scandal', the first and only head of the state to do so far. |
