| Army begins air surveillance on J&K highway: Gen Sharma | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 8
The national highway connecting Jammu with the Kashmir Valley was open for vehicular traffic after a brief disruption and aerial surveillance on it has commenced, a top army commander said on Friday. "There is no economic blockade as such. The highway is open and logistics are moving on it after a brief disruption," General Officer Commanding (GOC) Rising Star Corps Lt Gen Vinay Sharma told reporters here. It was blocked on August one and two, but from August three, the highway is open for vehicular traffic, he said adding that there have only been few incidents of disruptions. Before the agitation, nearly 1,150 vehicles were plying on the highway but after August two, over 400 vehicles are travelling to and from Kashmir daily, he said. In order to keep an eye on the protestors thronging the highway, aerial surveillance has started, he said adding our thrust is to keep the communication channels, highway and rail tracks, open at all costs. "If communication channels are disrupted or broken it would not be tolerated. Such an act would be construed as anti-national step and dealt sternly," Sharma said. The Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti (SASS) has said they have not enforced any economic blockade or blocked the highway, which is free and that trucks are moving freely towards the Valley. |
