| Centre's belated interference lacks sincerity | | Jammu Congress leaders need do more | | | The outright rejection by the Union government of the demand made by Sangarsh Samiti and all sections of the people of Jammu including many Congress leaders, which includes the former Sadraya Riyasat and Governor of J&K, Dr Karan Singh, who has 60 year long association with the political currents and cross currents in Jammu and Kashmir, for recall of Governor N N Vohra, betrays the Centre's adamancy and lack of realization on their part about the gravity and urgency of the situation, which is the creation of Governor Vohra's total mishandling of the situation from the very beginning. The Centre who intervened to defuse the volatile situation prevailing in Jammu region, as a result of the hurt psyche of the people of the region and volcanic outburst of their pent up emotions over suppression and denial of due to them, quite late, that too taking cursory view of the whole episode, by calling a meeting of representatives of all the political parties, national as well as regional, including from the far Southern states, whose leaders even do not have any knowledge about the geographical composition of J&K, much less of divergent aspirations of its various regions and ethnic identities, only shows lack of sincerity and earnestness on their part to take the corrective measures, well in time to check the situation from further deteriorating and taking dangerous proportions. More less is earnestness on the part of the Governor, who is still sitting in his ivory tower and is not prepared to shed the bureaucratic approach of exercising options which are repressive in nature and against the spirit of democratic norms. The appointment of a four member committee by him to initiate the process of dialogue with the Sangarsh Samiti, for reaching a negotiating settlement, after the tasks between the Governor himself and leaders of the Sangarsh Samiti failed to break the ground, because the Governor had no concrete proposal to end the deadlock, appears to be only a time gaining exercise in futility. Since Governor Vohra has lost the confidence of the people of Jammu, with all over demand for his recall, the only course left for him is to voluntarily submit his resignation, paving way for some other competent person who can instil confidence in the aggrieved party, to replace him as the Governor of the state. Dr Karan Singh has done well by sticking to his gun, even after rejection by the Centre of his suggestion to recall Governor N N Vohra, by reiterating the demand again. A large number of Congress leaders who have ultimately come round to supporting the present Jammu agitation, to checkmate Jammu people in general and their party supporters in particular getting totally alienated from them, need to do more than merely to issue statements. With their Central high command and the Union government headed by their party rejecting their demand even to replace N N Vohra by some other person as the State Governor, the option left with them is to offer enemas resignations from their posts in the party and even primary membership of the party, to build pressure on their party high command and the Central government. This will go to convince the people of their sincerity and unequivocal support to the mass agitation in Jammu. This can work, with the Center realizing the gravity of the situation. Similar actions taken by them in the past over the issue of prolonging of Amarnath yatra, had helped the Central government to concede the demand of Jammu people for two month long yatra, which was objected to by the then state Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. |
