Substantiating the government claims that smooth supply line is plying on Lakhanpur-Srinagar National Highway, a top Army General today denied the reports economic blockage as incessantly coming from Kashmir. Lt Gen Vinay Sharma, the GoC of the Rising Star Corps, told media persons here today that Army is stands guard along the Highway to ensure smooth plying of trucks with essential commodities. While asserting that the Army is on internal security duty just to assist the civilian authority, he warned the agitators against crossing limits of violating restrictions. He said, otherwise army would be forced to take corrective action to maintain the line of communications. The army officer also used the occasion to remind the leaders of the sangarsh samiti that 15 August is round the corner and militant outfits may take advantage of the volatile situation to trigger blasts and plan attacks in Jammu. Lt-Gen Vinay Sharma clarified that, “there was no disruption of logistics convoy moving up and down along the Jammu Srinagar-Pathankot national highway since August 2 when army was called out to restore the lines of communication". Lt Gen Sharma said, fresh intelligence reports also clearly indicate that terrorist organisations in this region would try and engineer some blasts or attack in the area taking advantage of the volatile situation.We are vigilant and prepared to handle the situation, he maintained. Taking a tough stand against the disruption of traffic on the national highway Lt Gen Sharma “army has been called in to aid civil administration restore normalcy and our endeavor is to do it at the earliest. He said, If any one -- whether it is an ex-service man or any other person found blocking the lines of communication, (then) after maximum restrain, minimum force will be used to clear the blockade. The Army commander said run-up to the Independence Day was the "most sensitive time" in Jammu and Kashmir and the security forces were keeping a close vigil in the terror-hit state. "We do have intelligence reports that the terrorists may try to engineer some sorts of blasts and attacks...," he said. Giving details, Lt Gen Sharma said there were reports of only marginal disruption of logistics along the national highway and at the gateway of Jammu and Kashmir in Lakhanpur before August 1 but that too were temporary in nature. He said over 400 supply trucks were moving up and down the highway under protection and there was no hindrance at any place. He said army men were constantly patrolling the sensitive highway to allow movement of supply trucks. "Army has also embarked on air surveillance of the national highway and railway link to avoid blockades". he added. He labeled agitators blocking the essential supplies as Anti-national and appealed to the angry protesters to demonstrate in their villages peacefully. He dropped clear hints that any one trying to block the essential supplies and disrupt movement of vehicles on the national highway would be dealt with sternly. "Army will open fire on protesters after exercising utmost restrain and only after state police and para military forces would fail to control the volatile situation". |
