| Jammu relax, curfew in Poonch | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 8
An eleven hour intermittent relaxation in curfew passed off peacefully across the town with no reported incident of violence or clash from any area even as people continued with protests and demonstrations with more renewed energy. Meanwhile, curfew was today imposed and army staged flag march in the border town of Poonch in the wake of violence by protestors over the Amarnath land row even as life remained crippled in the Kashmir valley following a strike called against economic blockade. Activists of the Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti (SASS), spearheading the agitation, had yesterday forced closure of schools, other educational institutes, government offices and banks in Poonch. Divisional commissioner Jammu Sudhanshu Pandey said,"Curfew has been imposed in Poonch town on Friday following group clashes between two groups on Thursday evening. It is a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incident," he added. They had also indulged in stone pelting on post offices and the telephone exchange in a bid to close down Central government establishments in the town. The spokesman said curfew was relaxed for varying periods in Jammu, Kathua, Samba and Udhampur towns as there were no reports of fresh violence. However, no curfew relaxation was given in the border town of Rajouri and Jourian area in Akhnoor, he said. |
