| Jaitley to represent BJP in all-party delegation to Jammu | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 8
Even as the local unit of BJP today ‘declined’ to get engaged with the visiting all party delegation constituted by the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, the central leadership has finally come in support of the efforts being made by the UPA government for breaking ice in Jammu. BJP President Rajnath Singh today cleared the air on sending a party representative to Jammu as part of the all-party delegation for a dialogue with the Amarnath agitators, when he called the Prime Minister and named party general secretary Arun Jaitley for the job. "Rajnath took the initiative to clear all doubts when he phoned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and told him that Arun Jaitley will represent the BJP in all-party delegation to Jammu," a senior BJP leader said. Earlier, the saffron party had expressed reservations on being a part of the delegation, arguing that land alloted to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) be returned before taking any further steps. It has also demanded removal of Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra. "Though the party is sending a representative, it has not taken back its demands," the BJP leader said. Rajnath Singh is said to have reiterated this to the Prime Minister in their telephonic conversation. The all-party delegation headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee is likely to leave for Jammu tomorrow. Meanwhile, the BJP is all set to take up the Amarnath land issue, the Centre's "soft" handling of terror and the "appeasement" policy of the Congress-led UPA government in tomorrow's youth rally here to be addressed by party leader L K Advani. "The country is agitated over the conduct of the government. On the one hand it bows before the separatist forces to cancel land alloted to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board; on the other it is soft on terrorists. This is a step ahead of being opportunist...," BJP youth wing chief Amit Thaker told reporters here. Announcing the youth rally at Ramlila Grounds here, Thaker said, "the people of the country are agitated over the working of the government. It is working for the welfare of separatists and firing at the nationalists on the streets of Jammu." The rally to be addressed by NDA's prime ministerial candidate Advani would witness a mass "Shiv Aradhana" in front of a nine feet ice "Shivlinga". More than a lakh youths would be led by Advani in worshipping Lord Shiv, he added. |
