Taking Jammuites for granted
7/25/2020 12:45:15 AM
J&K unit of Bharatiya Janata Party gearing up to celebrate the first anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35-A on August 5 has not evoked that much enthusiasm in Jammu region. Most of the people believe that BJP leaders from Jammu always wait for a chance to take credit of the achievements of the party’s central leadership.
The decision to do away with J&K’s special status and divide it into two union territories was taken by the BJP’s central leadership and Jammu leaders had no role in it. Exactly, after a year the local leaders are creating hype about it and want to project it as their achievement. But they should bear in mind that people of Jammu are well aware about their tricks and methods and they cannot be befooled.
According to the media reports people of Jammu are not that happy with J&K BJP leaders. Most of them believe that these leaders have not lived upto the expectations of people and have just acted as instruments. Prior to 2018, when the BJP central leadership decided to say goodbye to Kashmir centric PDP, the BJP leaders who shared power with the PDP in J&K for more than three years didn’t dare to open their mouth to challenge the hegemony of their coalition partner. The BJP leaders were busy reaping the fruits of power and they failed to address the issues which touched the skin of common man in the Jammu region.
Post August 5, 2019, these leaders have failed to convince the Centre to restore high speed internet in Jammu region. It’s unfortunate that they have been unable to drive home their point that people of Jammu are nationalist people and they should not be clubbed with Kashmir.
After losing power and the dissolution of the erstwhile J&K assembly former MLAs of the party are mostly seen in photographs carried in news papers or on TV channels. These leaders indulging in publicity stunts and not doing anything concrete have created a void between them and the people. The list of the mistakes committed by the Jammu based BJP leaders is long. It’s strange that despite committing so many follies these leaders believe that people will follow them blindly.
The local BJP leaders will have to work hard to rebuild their image as the common man in Jammu has developed a feeling that he has been let down by the politicians, whom he voted for with a hope that they will become his true representatives. But all his hopes stand shattered.
