Jammu | Aug 10

Despite strict curfew restrictions and continuous massive Army presence, people in Jammu City and other parts of region took out large processions and staged protest demonstrations for immediate return of forest land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.
Intermittent relaxation in curfew ranging from three hours to seven hours in various parts Jammu city, rest of district and Samba largely passed off peacefully with no incident of violence even as the demonstrations continued. The authorities announced that they have lifted curfew completed from the districts of Kathua and Poonch in view of improvement in situation. However, local reports said that the Police and Army has been kept on standby and curfew can be re-imposed in view of any untoward incident at these two places.
The intensity of protest protests and demonstrations and loud slogans was today higher than the past few days as thousands of people were not able to come out on Saturday when an all pervasive grand curfew was enforced in the region.
Meanwhile, yet another youth today made abortive bid to end life by consuming poison in solidarity with the Shri Amarnath Shrine land issue. The youth identified as Anil Kumar son of Bir Bhan Sharma consumed poisonous substances. He was taken to community health centre from where he was referred to GMC hospital where is condition is stated to be critical but out of danger. Later speaking to media persons the father of the victim said that he took extreme step on the failure of the talks between central delegation and the Sangarsh Samiti.
a day after the meeting between the all-party delegation and the Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti, curfew was on Sunday lifted in border districts of Poonch and Kathua and relaxed in Jammu, Samba, Rajouri and Udhampur. Peaceful protests were, however, held in the region where people burnt tyres and effigies of Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra over the Amarnath row.
"The district administration has lifted curfew in border towns of Kathua and Poonch since 0600 hours today after four days of its imposition in view of betterment in law and order situation," police officers said.
Authorities also relaxed curfew in Jammu, Samba, Udhampur and Rajouri districts and these passed off peacefully without any untoward incident, they said.
In Jammu and Samba district, where curfew continues for the 10th day on Sunday, it was relaxed for seven and five hours between 0500-1200 hours and 0500-1000 hours respectively.
In Udhampur and Rajouri, where curfew was imposed for the past seven days, was given curfew relaxation for two hours from 1100-1300 hours and 0700-0900 hours respectively.
"Curfew was reimposed in all these districts. Army also conducted flag marches in Jammu and Samba districts," they said.
The army has choked all road, lanes and by-lanes with barbed-wire fencing, turning Jammu city into a virtual battle field. Besides this, all entry and exits points are manned by army to maintain peace.
Meanwhile, according to an official spokesman, the colleges in the summer zone of Jammu Division will remain closed till August 16, 2008.
