As Jammu continues to be firm on it demand of restoration of forest land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board despite New Delhi’s entire attention on the developments in Kashmir, the winter capital city and its adjoining areas today observed a sort of civil curfew.
In continuous extension in relaxation of restrictions, the authorities today lifted curfew for 12 hours and people across the town and its adjoining areas refused to resume normal activity of life. It was a sort of civil curfew in the town as no one rushed to resume the normal life despite 12 hours long relaxation, Jammu City and its adjoining areas observed a complete shutdown.
The usual processions, protests and demonstrations, however, continued across the town and the adjoining areas. Shouting the slogans of Bum Bum Bhole, people took out large processions in different parts of city and called for restoration of 800 kanals of land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.
In an appeal published in local papers today, Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti (SASS) spearheading the Amarnath land row appealed to the people to extend their support in its fight against decision stalling the transfer of nearly 100 acres of forest land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.
Samiti's convener Leela Karan Sharma appealed for financial assistance to the family of those killed in the recent agitation.
The SASS said it will hold public meetings on August 12 and 13 in the Jammu region and also celebrate the Independence Day on August 15. However, now since the Samiti has been invited by the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh for talks, it is to be keenly seen as what kind of situation assumes in the coming day.
Meanwhile the Governor NN Vohra, today made a fervent appeal to the people to maintain calm and expressed deep grief over the loss of life and damage to property in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir regions. He expressed sympathy with the families who lost their near and dear ones in the unfortunate incidents.
In a televised appeal, the Governor attributed the prevailing unrest to unfounded suspicions and misconceptions and strongly urged the people not to give heed to mischievous rumours and support the efforts of the Administration in maintaining peace and tranquility.
Referring to the movement of supplies and transportation of fruit to and from the Valley, the Governor said that, notwithstanding the sporadic attempts to create obstacles in smooth vehicular movement for a day or two, the Srinagar-Lakhanpur National Highway has been fully sanitized and round-the-clock traffic movement ensured. Since the past 12 days, over 9000 trucks carrying fruit, merchandise, medicines petroleum products/LPG cylinders and other essential commodities have been transported from both the sides, which includes 800 truckloads of Kashmiri fruit transported to the plains.
Vohra saw no justification in the Muzzafarabad Chalo Call and said that the fruit mandis all over the country were eagerly awaiting for the Kashmiri fruit. He appreciated the need for uninterrupted transportation of apple during the current fruit season and said that he was himself monitoring the movement of fruit and essential supplies on the National Highway. He also referred to the measures taken to carry supplies in convoys with police escorts, fitted with wireless sets having direct communication with Police Control Rooms, and mobile patrolling under the supervision of the concerned District Superintendents of Police. He said that the Chief Secretary has been asked to monitor the movement of to ensure supplies round-the-clock smooth and uninterrupted flow.
The Governor renewed his appeal for peace, saying that this was imperative for carrying forward the development effort in all parts of the State. In this era of progress and development, the Jammu and Kashmir State cannot afford to lag behind, he maintained.
