| No blockade on J&K highway: army | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 13
Describing the allegation of an economic blockade against the Kashmir valley as totally baseless, Lt. Col. Goswami said that 700 trucks and tankers moved in and out of valley daily. The 300 km Jammu-Srinagar national highway, the only surface link connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country, has been completely restored for traffic and normal traffic carrying essential supplies is moving along the route. "Normal traffic is on along the highway, which was completely restored for traffic on August 4. There is no economic blockade as is being propagated," Defence spokesman, Lt Col S D Goswami said, adding that over 6668 trucks and tankers carrying essential supplies have plied along the route since August 5. Terming the allegation of an economic blockade totally wrong and baseless, Goswami said nearly 700 vehicles including trucks and tankers moved in and out of valley daily. Army, which has been assigned the job to keep the highway trafficable, has intensified patrolling along the route with army escorts accompanying all trucks and tankers plying along the highway, he said. "There has been no attack on any fruit-laden trucks or tankers during the past one week and traffic is totally normal," he said. Kashmir based separatist and mainstream political parties had alleged that the highway was closed by Amarnath protesters to engineer an 'economic blockade' on the valley. The valley has observing a shutdown for the last two days in protest. |
