Where do we go from here?
8/13/2008 11:20:05 PM
Jammu is adamant to fight for its cause and Kashmir is hell bent to make maximum out of the ongoing crisis in the state. Violence is spiraling and there are no signs of a semblance of returning to the state. At a time when prospects of peace were looking most bright, the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has assumed grave proportions with violence increasing and a compromise solution still nowhere in sight. At least 30 people have been killed in police firing so far in the Valley and in Jammu ever since the controversy over Shri Amarnath Shrine land allotment erupted. First time in 13 years, curfew has been imposed in entire Valley most of the districts of Jammu region. This indicates the seriousness of the security situation. Violent protests in Jammu appear to have abated slightly although tension continues to simmer in region. The Centre appears to be clueless as to how to proceed. It is yet to come up with an action plan to present at the talks. A new dimension has been added to the crisis with Kashmiris threatening to cross the LoC. While they should be stopped from breaching the LoC and marching into Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, the Centre should address the problem of rotting produce, if ever that exists. This will remove the sting from the separatists’ propaganda in the Valley. It is a pity that while J&K burns and the situation descends into that which existed in the early 1990s, political parties are posturing with their eye on votes in upcoming elections. On both sides of the divide there are organisations that see the ongoing crisis as an opportunity to reinvent themselves or to inject new life in their sagging political fortunes. If in Jammu, the Bharatiya Janata Party is refusing to work with the Centre in its bid to hammer out a compromise so as to deepen the Congress’ discomfiture, in the Valley, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Hurriyat are engaging in rank opportunism and stirring the separatist cauldron. While parties and politicians might make electoral gains in the short run, it is separatism and the politics of extremism that will be advanced by their current opportunistic strategies. The Hurriyat had been marginalised in Kashmir’s politics over the past decade but the controversy over the Amarnath land issue has given it fresh life. Various organisations instead of protecting the interests of yatris are boosting Kashmiri separatism with their adamant approach. It is the militants who are gaining ground from the row over land. Reports already indicate that militants are getting active to take advantage of the deteriorating security situation in the state. A common question which every body asks is that where do we go from here. Unfortunately, none has the clue. The wait and watch policy too has not helped much. Therefore, instead of waiting and watching anymore, the government must immediately come up with a solution and all those who have stakes in peace must play their role.
