Amidst flames of raging fire everywhere, the Principal Secretary Home Anil Goswami and Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda are making hectic efforts to convince the people of Kashmir Valley that traffic is smooth on the National Highway and there is no need of marching anywhere. Addressing a press conference in Srinagar today, Goswami said that as many as 234 Srinagar bound load carriers with essentials and fuel were on way to Srinagar on both sides of the Jawahar Tunnel this evening. He said the movement of the vehicles had to be regulated in view of some incidents on this side of the tunnel. Goswami said that a truck laden with medicines was seen returning back to Jammu as the driver had sensed some trouble due to imposition of curfew. However, he said the traffic officials followed and persuaded him to proceed to Srinagar. He said about 50 trucks bound for Srinagar were also seen returning back. He said that there have been same incidents following which the drivers coming to the valley with supplies were feeling some sense of insecurity. He appealed the people to help create congenial situation where truck drivers had no apprehensions about driving into the valley. He said the load carriers were brining supplies, fuel and medicines for he people of the valley and if the similar situation arose here as had happened on the other side then the people here would be put to lot of inconvenience. He appealed the media to help disseminate the message that the free flow of trucks was in the interest of people here. He said although the movement of vehicles on 14th and 15th August every year remains low, the administration would make every effort to ensure that maximum supplies were transported in to the valley. Giving details of law and order situation, the DGP, Mr. Kuldeep Khuda said that the situation today by and large remained under control barring some incidents of stone pelting, damaging government property and setting on fire two motor cycles of police department by the irate mob. He said in all, about 22 incidents of stone pelting and torching occurred today. He said the curfew was relaxed in the Srinagar city, Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama, Shopian, Ganderbal and Budgam. He said the curfew in Srinagar was relaxed for three hours in the morning and subsequently extended upto 8 pm following periodic review of the situation. He hoped that the situation will improve and return to normal soon. He said some miscreants tried to set on fire the SDA building at Bemina but timely intervention by police prevented major loss. He said an attempt was made to ransack the Police Chowki, Baramull. He said a tourist hut was torched at Charar-e-Sharief. He said that three more injured persons admitted in various hospitals succumbed in the morning today raising the death toll since August 11 to 20. Appealing the people to maintain peace and calm, Mr. Khuda said that all political leaders including those who addressed the gathering at Eidgah yesterday have beseeched the people to remain peaceful. Khuda said that the complaints made against some police personnel would be thoroughly looked into. He said restoring normalcy and peace was the joint responsibility of the security agencies and the people at large. Khuda said that despite chaka jam in Jammu and other parts of the country, the movement of traffic from Lakhanpur to Srinagar was normal and smooth. In reply to a question regarding movement of 'Kaarvan Aman' bus service across the LOC, he said the tomorrow's scheduled bus service has been postponed on account of the prevailing situation in the valley. |
