| With no early solution in sight, shut down extended till Aug 20 | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 13
As the Central Government failed to arrive at a solution as putforth by the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti (SAYSS) to end the present deadlock, the ongoing agitation has been extended by another six days. Meanwhile, an uneasy calm continued to prevail in Jammu and its adjoining areas where people took out the usual processions, protests and demonstrations demanding restoration of 800 kanals of forest land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board and also recall of the Governor NN Vohra. No incident of violence or clash has been reported from any part of the region. A 15-hours relaxation in curfew also passed off peacefully. The authorities had initially ordered relaxation in curfew from for 12 hours –between 5AM and 5PM. But it was later extended till 8 PM. However, as usual, the shops and other business establishments remained shut during the curfew relaxation. The Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti, spearheading the ongoing stir over the land transfer issue, today extended the shutdown in the entire region till August 20 and announced it would launch a fill-the-jail agitation from next week. These decisions were taken at a meeting of the Samiti, an amalgam of 35 political, social and religious outfits, here, its convenor Leela Karan Sharma told reporters. He said a "jail barho andolan (fill-the-jail agitation)" would be launched from August 18 and over one lakh protesters would court arrest in the region on that day. Sharma said the Samiti had extended the bandh (general strike) in the region till August 20 to mount pressure on the Centre for fulfilment of its demands. He accused some Kashmiri leaders of trying to confuse the Centre on the issue and asserted the Samiti would not accept anything less than restoration of land to the Amarnath Shrine Board. Meanwhile, the Bar Association Jammu today decided to extend its on going strike till August 20, 2008 and if the land was not restored to the Shrine Board till August 20, 2008, the strike may go ahead. In the meeting which was held under the chairmanship of its President Adv BS Salathia strongly condemned the cowardly act of the anti-social and communal elements in destroying the properties of minorities of Kishtwar and terrorizing them. BAJ termed it as grave violation of Human Rights and asked the Governor of J&K and Central Govt to adopt strict measures to curve such attempts and deal such elements which tend to disturb the communal harmony in the State by Iron hand to avoid such incidents in future. BAJ asked the state and Central Govt to award compensation to all the effective whose properties have been damaged. Bar Association Jammu said that the ongoing agitation is decisive battle for the survival of a secular society and against the hegemony of Pseudo secular Kashmir Centric Politics and appeasement policies of the center and as such has to be taken to its logical end. BAJ asked the people of Jammu region to stand united for fighting this decisive battle of survival and also fight discriminatory treatment meted out by such elements vis-à-vis the people of Jammu region. BAJ said that religious intolerance of separatists and fundamentalists supported Kashmir centric political leaders for vote politics has pushed the state to the present situation. BAJ again appealed to the people of Jammu region to maintain communal harmony and brotherhood to defeat nefarious designs of some vested interest who are hell bent to sabotage the ongoing agitation for restoration the land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board. Bar Association constitute a committee of Six advocates including Sr. Advocates VA Gupta & DC Raina, Advocates RK Kotwal, RK Gupta, Rahul Pant and SK Shukla to examine the provocative speeches of PDP President Mehbooba Mufti for launching criminal prosecution against her and also demanded that Mehbooba be removed from the seat of Lok-Sabha for her anti-national speeches. In the press-conference Adv Slathia referred the decisions of single judge of the state high court regarding the land and thereafter the direction of the Division Bench in an appeal filed by state through its Chief Secretary. |
