Are we helping separatist cause?
8/14/2008 11:02:36 PM
Just look at the tragedy of India on Kashmir. A small administrative order which, of course, lacked the administrative acumen and political vision has taken the issue to an extent that now even Pakistan is threatening of United Nation's intervention. It is an old saying that a spark neglected burns the house –this is exactly what is happening in our state these days. We need to talk about two sparks that were neglected. One is the oldest and the other one is new. The oldest neglected spark was the Kashmir issue itlsef. For more than 50 years India has been indulging into a policy of appeasement on Kashmir and the basic issue were never settled with will and determination. Whenever there is a small trouble, Kashmir and Kashmiris are always back to square one. The other spark we are talking about is this recent bungle on the Shri Amarnath Shrine land transfer controversy. Had the problem been addressed in time as per aspirations of the people, things would have been different. Now the government appears to betray no signs that it is in the middle of an emergency of extraordinary sensitivity in the border state. The situation turned more fragile with several dying in police firing in half a dozen places in the Valley on Tuesday to quell angry mobs who defied curfew to take out funeral processions for those killed the previous day. All the 10 districts of the Kashmir division have been placed under curfew. This has not happened for a dozen years. Making matters worse is the arousal of the communal spirit in both the Jammu and the Kashmir divisions of the state. The manner of the slide in the situation in the state over the past month and a half does little credit to the Indian State. The ruling dispensation in New Delhi bestirred itself only when Jammu began to burn. The Centre had showed no signs of life as Kashmir was in turmoil and Srinagar in the grip of violence for nine consecutive days. Observers in Srinagar express surprise that the governor's administration failed even to impose curfew in Sopore, Kashmir's apple town, a day before the proposed march to Muzaffarabad was to commence from there, allowing protesters to gather in very large numbers. The date of the procession had been known for a week. The role of the Opposition BJP in Jammu and in New Delhi has been questionable. Giving in to narrow sectarian politics, and showing little regard for the international dimension of the Kashmir problem, the party played on its favourite theme even as preparations were being made for the march to Muzaffarabad, itself a throwback to the times in the 1990s when the writ of the State had ceased to run in the Valley. The separatists, until recently down and out, have been handed an advantage and appear determined to benefit from the confusion in New Delhi and in Jammu.
