| Economic blockade mere myth | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 14
While all separatist and mainstream political parties of Kashmir raise the bogey of so called economic blockade to the Valley allegedly launched by the agitation of Jammu region, the facts, figures and ground reports suggest the contrary. A group of our reporters traveling the National Highway, at its various stretches, have brought the reports of lies and politics over economic supplies. It comes out that some disruption in the routine traffic to Kashmir at several points of National Highway did take place but that can take anywhere where protests, demonstrations and curfews are going on. There was no organized stoppage of trucks loaded with commodities on their way to the Valley. Hundreds are trucks are still queued up at different points on the National Highway but this is due to the prevailing tension in curfew in the Valley. A team of state administration and Police, under direct monitoring of the Governor NN Vohra and Chief Secretary SS Kapur is constantly supervising the supply movement to the Kashmir Valley. Meanwhile the intelligence agencies have revealed that they have credible evidence to suggest that Pakistan's intelligence agency, ISI staged economic blockade drama to help the separatist movement. According to reports, the top intelligence officers, during a crucial high-level meet convened on Wednesday, concluded that the ISI was trying to capitalise on the contrived protest about the 'economic blockade' and project their confirm loyalists in the separatists as the true well wishers of those living in the Kashmir valley. Elaborating more on ISI’s misdemeanor, the intelligence officials said that the Pak agency was trying to help Hurriyat win the lost ground and push the local residents to look forward to Pakistan-controlled Muzaffarabad as an alternate option.
Meanwhile, the Home Ministry has also released figures to rebuff claims by the protestors regarding the “non-existent economic blockade” and reports that truckers and fruit growers encouraged myth-making about the blockade with Hurriyat’s backing. The Home Ministry also refuted claims of economic blockade at the Srinagar-Jammu highway in its reports. The figures released by the Home Ministry suggest that no less than 236 trucks and tankers carrying oil, gas, sheep, medicines and poultry products crossed the Jawahar Tunnel from the Jammu side early on Wednesday morning. Referring to the disruption of vehicular movement in the valley, a top ministry official stated that a number of trucks actually belonged to an individual known for his close contacts with Hurriyat. The official further claimed that the transporter was assured of a full security cover along the route. However, the truck owner refused to move his fleet towards Jammu. Home Ministry report suggests that the decision to halt the movement of truck supplies taken by of some of the fruit growers and truckers had nothing to do with the genuine security concerns. Meanwhile, Home Minister Shivraj Patil had on yesterday submitted his assessment report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in which he asserted that there was no blockade on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. In his report, Patil also mentioned that adequate security measures were taken by the government to ensure uninterrupted movement of vehicles. The figures only confirm the suspicion that the blockade had been staged as part of ISI's design to help Hurriyat occupy the space which had till now been occupied by political parties. |
