Amidst the signs of some normalcy returning to the region on Shri Amarnath Shrine land row, yet another person has committed suicide with a clear note that he is offering his life for the cause. This was eleventh death in Jammu region during the ongoing agitation. Including today’s case, two persons have committed suicide, four died in Police firing (two in Kishtwar and two in Samba), one died in Army firing in Kathua, two dies of mysterious firing in Samba, one died of grenade wounds while another passed away after being injured in a Police chase in the old city area. The other case of suicide is of Kuldeep Kumar. A retired Ayurvedic Doctor, Balwant Rai committed suicide at Hiranagar where the Samiti supporters are staging a protest sit-in. Sources said that he had already consumed poison when he reached the venue and his condition was critical. At the venue of agitation at Hirinagar, he offered a suicide note in which it was written that he has left his property and belongings in support of the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti and is offering his life for the cause. He was immediately rushed to the Government Medical College but he breathed last on the way. Reports said the venue of the Samiti agitation was just close to the residence of Dr Balwant where initially offered to sit on hunger strike this morning. However, the Samiti representatives advised him on not doing so. They told him that the Samiti has clearly advised against sitting on hunger strike or committing suicide as these are signs of cowards. However, Balwant rushed his home and returned to the venue after consuming poison. This is the second suicide over the issue in past 20 days. Earlier, a youth Kuldeep Kumar Dogra had committed suicide to after a hurting speech of the National Conference president Omar Abdullah. Dr Balwant’s suicide has triggered yet another wave of unrest across the region. Many parts of region immediately erupted into protests and demonstrations. Meanwhile, hitting out at the BJP and the Hurriyat, Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh today said here that they are using the Amarnath shrine land controversy to gain political mileage in Jammu and Kashmir. Supporting UPA government, Amar Singh said the Centre had not "mishandled" the matter. "BJP and Hurriyat were waiting for such a political opportunity and they are trying to encash it", Singh told reporters at Mantralaya. "Trifurcation of the Valley -- Jammu for Hindus, Kashmir for Muslims and Ladakh for Buddhists -- was the ploy of the RSS and BJP leader L K Advani is executing the dangerous conspiracy," he said. People had turned their backs to the Hurriyat but the Amarnath land row has rejuvenated the party, the SP leader said, adding the Hurriyat and the BJP have incited public feelings. "What even Pakistan had failed to do, BJP has succeeded in dividing people of the Valley," Singh alleged. |
