| Samiti has own do on I-day | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 14
To make its deep disenchantment with the government known to all, the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti, spearheading ongoing agitation in Jammu, is all set to have a separate Independence Day celebration function and not joining the official affair. As we had already reported, this is happening perhaps for the first time in history of Jammu that a majority is not likely to attend the official Independence Day celebrations which otherwise has always been a patriotic tradition of this place. The main function being hosted by the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti is being held at the Mubarak Mandi –the historical heritage site which was once the center of the Maharaja’s governance. The Samiti has also arranged similar function in other of region including the district headquarters. For the people of Gandhi Nagar, Trikuta Nagar, Chhani Himmat and adjoining areas the venue has been fixed at Bahu Plaza. It may also be mentioned here that all constituent groups of the Samiti, including the BJP, have boycotted the official function of Independence Day. Accusing the Centre of being "indifferent" to the situation in Jammu and Kashmir over the Amarnath land transfer row, Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) Mayor, Kavinder Gupta today said he would boycott the Independence Day function. Taking a jibe at the "relevance" of democracy in the light of the ongoing protests, the Mayor said "Jammuites are in pain. Has the government got pain killers?" "Considering the behaviour of the Centre, I have taken a painful decision of not participating in government- organised Independence Day function," he said in a statement. Meanwhile, amid intelligence warnings of terror attacks on Independence day, a high alert was sounded here on Thursday and security personnel have been deployed all over the city for round the clock vigil. The alert was sounded in view of dozens of intercepts of conversations by militant groups and warnings by army's military intelligence wing regarding the possibility of militant attacks in Jammu on the eve of Independence day function. "We have sounded a high alert in Jammu city in wake of apprehension of militant threats. We have received militant intercepts in this direction," Senior Superintendent of Police, Jammu, S D S Singh Jamwal said. Army, BSF, CRPF and state police personnel have been deployed in the city and adjoining areas. "We warn of militant attacks in Jammu on or before I-day function as we have intercepted several militant messages and conversations in this direction," Defence Spokesman, Lt Col S D Goswami said. The intercepts referred to Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blasts and grenade attacks, he said adding militants could exploit the situation out of Amarnath land row. "We apprehend that militants can use uncertain situation developed in Jammu due to Amarnath row to their advantage and may throw grenades and cause blast in places of rallies or agitations," he said. Security blanket has been thrown around railway station and the bus stand here, while patrolling along Pathankote-Jammu-Udhampur railway track has been intensified, police said. |
