With violent protests over the Amarnath land transfer issue continuing unabated in Jammu and Kashmir, Governor N N Vohra on Thursday held an all-party meeting of mainstream political parties in the state to discuss a way to resolve the matter. The meeting was called by Vohra at short notice to discuss the prevailing situation in the state and to find a way out of it, official sources said. Abdul Rahim Rather (National Conference), Mehbooba Mufti (PDP), Sofi Yousuf (BJP), Bashir Ahmad Kothoo (National Panthers' Party), M Y Tarigami (CPIM) and Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen (PDF) were among those who attended the meeting chaired by the Governor, they said. Vice-chancellor of Kashmir university Professor Riyaz Punjabi and Vice chancellor of Islamic University for Science and technology Professor Sidiq Wahid were among the others who participated in the parley. At least 21 persons including senior Hurriyat Conference leader Sheik Abdul Aziz were killed and hundreds were injured in police action during the last three days. The state is marred by violent protests for and against the transfer of 40 hectares of forest land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board to build temporary facilities to pilgrims visiting the hill temple. Meanwhile, in his independent day message, the Governor said his government is committed to continuing the dialogue process involving representatives of various agitating groups to evolve an amicable solution to the Amarnath land row. "It should be our collective responsibility to resolve the most contentious issues through the democratic process, based on dialogue and conciliation," he said in a message on the eve of Independence Day. Vohra asked the people to "act in best traditions of their spirit of assimilation and accommodation and support the sincere efforts of the administration in restoring the damaged social fabric of the state". The Governor expressed the hope that the people of the three regions--Kashmir, ladakh and Jammu--would strive towards assuaging the feelings of all those hurt and aggrieved. "We have to rise beyond communal, regional and the ideological divides and strive to recreate a peaceful environment across the state", he said. He appealed to the people to totally shun the path of violence and maintain peace and calm in this difficult hour, in keeping with the glorious traditions of secularism, brotherhood and communal harmony. |
