Sixty-second Independence Day of India was celebrated with remarkable enthusiasm in Jammu but it was a unique way of celebration where the official venue –the Maulana Azad Memorial Stadium –wore a nearly deserted look while thousands of people participated in the flag hoisting ceremony hosted by the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti which is spearheading the present popular agitation in Jammu.
At the official function, the Advisor to the Governor, Dr SS Bloeria hoisted tricolour and took salute. By any estimate the gathering at the official function was not more than a 1000 odd people including contingents of Police and Paramilitary forces and government employees. The function organized by the Samiti clearly outnumbered the official function by many times.
Reports pouring in different parts of Jammu region also suggested that the ceremonies hosted by the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti attracted huge gathering –particularly in Kathua and Udhampur. Children were largely away from both functions –the official and the other hosted by the Samiti.
Thousands of local residents from different parts of the city reached Mubarak mandi to join the I-Day celebrations organised by the Amarnath yatra sangarsh samiti. The event brought people from all walks of life to the main venue where leaders of the sangarsh Samiti led by convener Leela Karan Sharma hoisted the national tricolour amid.
Chanting nationalsit slogans thousands of people reached venue ofthe Mubarak mandi and joined the celebrations. The traffic was not allowed to move closer to the Mubarak mandi area yet people made little effort and reached there on foot braving slight drizzle. However, the main function organised by the state authorities was completely boycotted by the local residents. Barring few former legislators and officials of the state government the function was boycotted by the local residents. Advisor to the Governor and former chief secretary SS Bloeria hoisted the flag amid tight security arrangements.
People from every nook and corner came out of their houses and participated in similar other flag hoisting ceremonies across the city and other adjoining areas.
Barring a few officials and a few former Congress ministers, no political leader was seen at the Parade groundvenue. The National Conference and the People's Democratic Party were conspicuous by their absence.
Men, women and children marched to the venue with the tricolour in their hands. All the routes to the venue were decorated with the tricolour. After the flag hoisting ceremony leaders of the sanagrsh samiti expressed their anger for not receving any response from any quarter to carry forward the dialogue process.
