| …and they talk about Muzaffarabad route | | Trucks: In 24 hours, 275 enter, 222 leave Valley | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 16
After a highest political posturing of past five decades by announcing to march towards the Pakistan occupied Kashmir capital of Muzaffarabad the separatists are still upping the ante for taking same route in a blatant ignorance of the fact that supplies of essential commodities into Valley and export of produce out of the Valley is following a traffic which is far more above normal. The separatist sentiment in the Kashmir Valley has always remained alive in its many hues but the move of marching towards Muzaffarabad was the highest political posturing of past fifty years which was clearly devised to attract the international attention. The failure of state and central government is clearly evident in projecting the ground realities and supply position in and out of the Valley. While the repeated threat of separatists to again lead a march towards Muzaffarabad still alive, only today’s statistics of traffic movement on the National Highway between Lakhanpur and Srinagar belly all such allegations. An official spokesman confirmed here late this evening that as many as 497 vehicles moved to and fro on the National Highway (NH) today. Out of these 275 went upward to Srinagar, these included 60 Petrol, Oil, Diesel Tankers, 46 vehicles of Food Corporation of India (FCI), 23 of Poultry and Live stock, 5 of milk and fruits and remaining of other essentials. Likewise 222 vehicles came from Srinagar to Jammu which included 110 fruit trucks. Reports coming from different fruit markets of the Valley say that with the movement of load carriers on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and onwards fully secured and plying of trucks and tankers on the road is picking up momentum, the Sopore Fruit Mandi has started its normal functioning of transportation of fruit to the outside markets from today. Over 40, 000 fruit boxes have been loaded at the Mandi on 50 trucks today for dispatch to the terminal markets in the country. The Fruit Association Sopore and the truck owners have entered into the freight agreement for transhipment of Kashmir fruit to various markets in the country. As per the agreed rates, the freight charges form Sopore to Delhi for each fruit box has been fixed at Rs. 65 while the rates for transportation to Punjab will be Rs. 40 to 45 per box. The fruit boxes from various areas are reaching Sopore Mandi for onward transportation to the country's markets. Over 5000 fruit boxes reached the Mandi this afternoon which are being cleared by the evening. Meanwhile, the Department of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) has been geared up to ensure uninterrupted supply of food grains to all ration depots in Kashmir valley. In this connection, measures have been taken to dispatch adequate number of trucks to all depots. The Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir has appealed the general public to allow free movement of trucks and tankers carrying essential commodities, petrol, diesel, Kerosene oil and LPG so that the trucks reach safely to various ration depots and destinations in the valley. |
