| Infiltration, ex-filtration continues inJ&K | | Obstacle system being provided on Jammu border | | B L KAK NEW DELHI, SEPT. 8: As part of the Union government's plan to curb cross-border terrorism and infiltration and ex-filtration, the international border in Jammu region as well as certain points along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch and Rajouri districts are being provided with an obstacle system. Erection of an obstacle system along Jammu’s international border has been planned, according to a Ministerial source. Other measures taken by the government to prevent infiltration on international border and Line of Control (LoC), he told EARLY TIMES, included better border management, multi-tier deployment of security forces and police, improved collection of sharing of intelligence and intensification of patrolling both on land and the riverine border. The Ministerial source stated in reply to a question that Indo-Pak border in Punjab and Rajasthan had been fenced with security fencing augmented with flood lights. Only small stretches of riverine and non-feasible areas have been left out. These areas, according to him, have been provided with improvised fencing. On the number of security personnel posted per kilometre in border areas, he made it clear that while the situation on the border "is under constant review", it would not be desirable to disclose actual deployment for Indian forces on the border. The length of the international border with Pakistan is 2,296 km in addition to the Line of Control (740 km) and Actual Ground Position Line (110 km) in Jammu and Kashmir. The Ministerial source said in reply to another question that steps had been taken afresh to flush out militants, check infiltration and curb militant activities in Jammu and Kashmir. These steps also included closer vigil on the border, by intensive patrolling and extensive search operations. It is offical: Government has adopted a multi-pronged approach in Jammu and Kashmir. This included, among other things, strengthening border managfement, neutralising plans of the militants by pro-active action against them in the hinterland, gearing up intelligence machinery, greater functional integration through an institutional framework of operation groups and intelligence groups of the Unified Headquarters at all levels, improved technology, weapons and equipments for security forces. It is also offical: A number of misguided Kashmiri youth had been going across to Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) for training in arms, explosive handling, sabotage and subversion. Interrogation of some of the terrorists, who returned after training and subsequently arrested while indulging in actions, had revealed that some of the youth were also being sent to training camps located on Pakistan-Afghanistan border for advance training. The Government is vigilant regarding any threat to national security from all possible quarters and had sensitised all concerned in this regard.
