| Stop burning our money | | | | When we switch on the idiot box –as television is popularly known –one is left confused over the selection of channels. If it is a general entertainment channel all one gets is the same old family melodrama. And if it’s a news channel, one gets less of news and more of superstition and the like. Amidst all this made game the only hope available is Doordarshan. Added to this hope is the money of the common man (taxpayer) that goes into making and running of the complete bouquet of Doordarshan. Unfortunately switching on the Doordarshan is these days perhaps the biggest disappointment. See what DD is doing during Beijing Olympics. Consider this case: X, a high-profile athlete, wins a gold with a record-breaking performance. DD airs an ad, then cuts to the studio. The anchors, caught off guard, repeat for the nth time that X has won a gold medal before announcing: “over to Beijing”. But there’s no sight of Beijing as DD airs another ad. And then it’s back to the studio. The anchors of DD, seemingly a TV house by default, spout banalities and clichés in two languages. And the customised commentary is boisterous, manufactured and utterly intolerable. This is not the case with their Olympic coverage but with almost every program of DD. These range of channels managed by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting are fed by the public money –which is our money and also your money. The authorities at helm of affairs must take charge of things –either they should improve services or stop burning or money. |
