| Silver foils - now 100 pc veg and safe | | |
Jammu | September 8 DS Group has introduced 100 per cent pure and vegetarian silver foils in India by the brand name Catch. The manufacturing process involves electronically beating silver with Hammer machine, between a special paper, in a hygienically controlled dust free atmosphere. This is the first and the largest plant in India to produce such foils, which has been setup with international collaboration. Apart from silver foils, gold foils are also made using a similar technique. 24 carat gold is used to manufacture gold foils. Silver foils are presumed to be vegetarian because sweets covered in 'varak' are offered in prayers at Hindu temples all over India. They are also used to garnish betel leaf and other eatables. A finely pounded sheet of silver, so thin it splits when touched, is placed atop many Indian sweets to make them look mouthwatering.
Controversies have emerged in the recent past in connection with silver foil. Reports claimed that consumption of silver foil, popular by the name 'Varak' among Indians, is not hygienic because it is manufactured by beating the metal finely between the intestines of oxen and cattle, which are bound like a notebook after cleaning. A sliver piece is then placed in the middle of these bound intestines, which are sealed. The leather bag is pounded with wooden sticks, until the bag is flattened out, creating a very fine film of silver. The silver foil thus created is separated from the intestine pack, placed on paper and finally shipped to consumers who unknowingly eat minute quantities of meat, blood, and other impurities attached to its surface. DS Group's silver foil division is located in Noida and is already started catering to a lot of sweets manufacturers, dry fruit and condiments industry. |
