As New Delhi’s United Progressive Alliance government and Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra’s administration continue to look towards each other for dousing fire in the state and buying more time for peace, the National Security Advisor MK Narayanan today had a marathon discussion in Srinagar with top officers of administration and the leaders of political parties. Pressed by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh as a firefighting emissary, Narayanan reached Srinagar this morning to have a first hand assessment of the ground situation. He was accompanied by Defence Secretary, Mr Vijay Singh, Chairman Joint Intelligence Committee, Mr H Upadayay, Director Intelligence Bureau, Mr P C Haldar and the Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister's Office, Mr Sanjay Mitra, was here on a day-long visit. Narayanan's visit comes two days after thousands of people gathered near the local office of the United Nations Military Observers Group for India and Pakistan demanding an intervention of the international body. According to an official spokesman Narayan reviewed the Jammu and Kashmir situation with Governor, Mr N N Vohra, Advisor (Home), Dr Sudhir S Bleoria and other senior officers of the Central and the State Governments. In the meeting, lasting over three hours, issues pertaining to the situation in Jammu and in Kashmir were discussed in detail. These included law and order, security, public distribution system and measures related to the strengthening of the administrative machinery down to the Tehsil and Block level. It was decided, interalia, to facilitate discussions with one all groups/parties which were protesting. Among those Mr Narayan met included the senior echelons of the Army, the three Advisors to the Governor, besides senior civil and police officers of the State Government. Besides the security review, the National Security Advisor also met several leaders of Jammu and Kashmir political parties. |
