Tension on kids’ day, violence rocks Jammu

As Jammu refuses to relent at any cost less than the restoration of 800 kanals of land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, the situation today literally went out of control with people picking up sporadic clashes with the security forces and ransacking the public facilities including Police Stations. After 50 days of a unanimous non-partisan protest and demonstration, today agitation saw some political colours when the house of a BJP leader was attacked by the agitators and party accused the Congress of inciting passions. Such clashes on political-party basis have also been reported from Akhnoor where serious tension erupted following a scuffle between activists of BJP and Congress.
Yet another person today died in connection with the ongoing agitation. An agitator, identified as Deepak Sharma, 19, was on way to court arrest between Bari Brahma and Bishnah at a place called Deoli when he fell down a tractor trolley and sustained serious head injuries. He was rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital here, where doctors declared him as brought dead. His death triggered serious protests and demonstrations.
In another development, the Shri Amarnath Yatra Samgharsh Samiti has given nod to its talk with the four-member panel constituted by the Governor NN Vohra. The Samiti has nominated a four member sub-group which shall be holding talks with the Governor. The members of the group are: Prof Narinder Singh, Brig Suchet Singh, Tilak Raj Sharma and Pawan Kolhi.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of children accompanied by their parents today courted arrests at several places in Jammu City and other parts of the region. Elders accompanying the children are reported to have laid siege at atleast a couple of Police Stations in Jammu City.
The third day of the jail bharo agitation witnessed widespread protests across Jammu in which over 50 people received injuries and several vehicles were burnt by angry mob on the streets of Jammu despite curfew restrictions.
Army columns and anti riot police force staged flag marches in Jammu to restore order but clashes were going on in curfew bound areas across Jammu till last reports came in.
"Three maruit cars and scooters were torched by the angry protestors outside police station in Janipur area. Tents pitched atop Rehari police station also caught fire under mysterious circumstances when large number of activists converged outside the police station to court arrest",police spokesman said in Jammu.
An estimated number of over 1 lakh activists of the sangarsh samiti includng large number of children drapped in national tricolour courted arrest,Narinder Singh spokesman of the sangarsh samiti said.Similar proicessions were taken out across other areas and large number of people courted arrest. One vehicle parked inside the house of BJP General secretary (organization) in Gandhinagar area and one official vehicle parked inside the premises of Directorate of statistics and economics was torched by angry protestors triggering fresh violence in the area.
Akhnoor witnessed violent clashes between Congress supporters and activists of the Amarnath yatra sangarsh samiti in which over one dozen people received injuries.The congress supporters led by the former congress legislator ShyamLal Sharma clashed with activists of the sangarsh samiti and pelted stones at each other.
Meanwhile junior doctors in the Jammu medical college went on strike to protest the highhandedness of the security forces after one of the doctor was beaten by police.Identified as Dr Vineet Gupta, received injuries when he was thrashed by police while he was visiting Government medical college to discharge his duties.Para medical staff of the hospital also joined the strike.Emergeny services were exempted from the strike.
The situation was tense in Jammu since Tuesday evening and the district authorities had clamped curfew in several sensitive areas to prevent violent clashes.Defying curfew large number of activists of the Amarnath yatra sangarsh samiti came out of their houses and clashed with police and para military forces demanding restoration of forest land and removal of Governor NN Vohra.Reacting sharply to the attempt of the state sponsored hooligans to set afire the house o the BJP General secretary Organization, Ajay Jamwal, under the very nose of the police in protected and safe zone state BJP chief Ashok Khajuria said that this is the state of affairs in the winter capital.The state government has completely surrendered before the anti national elements, who are conducting there subversive and anti social activities with utmost ease.He said Governor NN Vohra must be dismissed and shunted out of the state immediately in order to restore peoples faith, Khajuria said.
