Cracks wide and open
9/25/2020 11:15:24 PM
National Conference parliamentarians maintaining silence over detention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti is an indication that the NC has not taken the so-called “Gupkar Declaration” so seriously and the bonhomie between the Kashmir centric parties is about to end soon.
These parties have created a notion that they have joined hands to get everything back but it’s an attempt to hoodwink people again. By not raising the issue of Mehbooba Mufti’s detention, the National Conference has dropped a hint that it’s doesn’t want to become anyone’s spokesperson. And it appears that the National Conference has been made to sign the so-called “Gupkar Declaration” under pressure.
Since the day political activities have resumed in Kashmir, National Conference and other parties appear to be confused.
They seem to have no idea about how to handle the situation and what to tell the people. Mehbooba Mufti pretending to be a “hard nut” to break has put the other parties in a quandary. It looks like that Mehbooba is dictating terms to National Conference but by not raising her issue in the Parliament the NC has sent a message that other parties have to resolve their issues on their own.
The NC leaders not talking about Mehbooba Mufti in the Parliament prompted her daughter Iltija Mufti to a file a fresh petition in the Supreme Court to seek her mother’s release. She thanked the leaders of other parties, who raised the issue of her mother.
Praising others was more a taunt to NC rather than an expression of gratitude.
This recent development is an indication that the so-called unity among the Kashmir centric parties won’t last long. Cracks have already appeared. Farooq Abdullah talking briefly about Centre’s August 5, 2019 decision in the Parliament has not gone that well with the other parties which had joined hands with the National Conference last month. The reactions which have emerged indicate that these parties have realized that they will have to create their own space and cannot just rely on Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti. It appears that these parties very soon will announce that their ideologies are different and they won’t be able to tread on the same path.
Plans of PDP president Mehbooba Mufti to make other parties dance to her tunes seem to have boomeranged and she has been left alone and isolated. She and her party stands on crossroads.
